Forgetting God

Psalms 9:17: The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

If you have a King James translation of the Bible, you will notice that the word and is in italics. That means that it was not in the original manuscripts. The wicked that shall be turned into Hell are the individuals and nations that forget God. Forgetting God must be and is a horrible offense. Forgetting Him is the first step toward a multitude of other sins. It is connected to many other sins. If even our forgetfulness of Him is wicked, how much more our willfully disobeying Him?

Judges 3:7: And the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD, and forgat the LORD their God, and served Baalim and the groves.

1 Samuel 12:9: And when they forgat the LORD their God, he sold them into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.

Psalms 106:21-23: They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt; 22 Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea. 23 Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.

Individuals without Christ in their hearts are the worst offenders in this. They have not personally experienced how wonderful He is. Forgetting Him is what they want to do all the time. They don*t think highly of Him.

Romans 1:28: And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Psalms 10:4: The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts.

We who have received Jesus have tasted how wonderful He is and sometimes want to think appropriately and highly enough of Him. But we fail often. Otherwise we would not have needed this command:

2 Corinthians 10:5: Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

I don*t know how many times I forget God in the course of my days. Sometimes it lasts for hours.

1 Thessalonians 5:17: Pray without ceasing.

Psalms 113:3: From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD*S name is to be praised.

When I forget God I am not praying and I am not praising Him.

1 John 1:9: If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

When I can*t think of a particular sin I have committed to confess and ask forgiveness for, there are at least three that I am guilty of every day, forgetting God, ceasing to pray and not praising Him. Confessing those three sins is a good way to freshen up my relationship with Him. When I wonder why something has gone sour in my relationship with Him, it can be helpful to just remember that even my forgetfulness of Him comes short of His glory. When my relationship with Him is not right, it is NEVER His fault.
